How EDSS is Used to Assess Disability in Multiple Sclerosis
The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) gauges the extent of a person's disability by measuring the level of neurologic impairment. EDSS scores range from 0 to 10. Higher scores indicate a more severe form of disability.
Often, a patient's idea of disability is quite different than that of his or her doctor. Because of this, most experts prefer to rely on clinical observation of performance (observed EDSS) rather than a patient's testimonial.
By working closely with your doctor, the EDSS is just one more weapon you can use in your fight against MS. Look at the EDSS as an important part of your Battle Plan. Your doctor is the Field Commander. You're not alone in this battle. Your army consists of thousands of others who, like you, intend to win the cumulative battles, and ultimately, the war.
